A Notary is a qualified lawyer and member of the oldest branch of the legal profession in the UK. Notaries are appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and are subject to regulation by the Office of Faculties. There are approximately 850 Notaries in England and Wales.
Notaries are mainly concerned with foreign matters and with the verification of documents and information that will be used in foreign countries. The duty and the function of a notary is to prepare, authenticate and certify deeds and other documents for use overseas or in foreign courts. This work can be carried out for commercial firms engaged in international trade and for private individuals.
In a recent new law, English Notaries were given back their special evidentiary status, allowing any Notarial documents to be accepted as evidence by a judge without having to further prove or verify their contents. Due to this change, it is now a great advantage to use a Notary in many different circumstances to witness and record events or documents for future use both in England and abroad.
